ABRA PAMPA

Located at the entrance to the Puna, it was founded on August 30, 1883 as the new capital of the department of Cochinoca. It replaced the old town of Puna in its political function. The new town was called ""Siberia Argentina"" by the desolation of the place. The name was unsuccessful, and it was renamed with the one it had always been known as.

Abra Pampa is currently the headquarters of the Huancar festivals and in August is the feast to the Pachamama. The tourist infrastructure is minimal; there is lodging in a modest hotel. Near the town you have Vicuñera de Miraflores, in an experimental station of INTA, where are reared vicuña in semi-freedom. It is usual to see along the routes of the area herds of these animals, which are identified by colors.
From Abra Pampa is also possible to see the nearby towns of Casabindo, Cochinoca and Rinconada, which maintain the rhythm and traditions of centuries ago, including the only run of bulls in the country. Other attractions to discover are the Natural Monument of Laguna de los Pozuelos and the lagoon Runtuyoc.
