ANTOFAGASTA DE LA SIERRA

Antofagasta de la Sierra is a town in the Puna Argentina that goes toward becoming true “worship place"" for lovers of adventure tourism. Few places remain in our country that still offers corners for being discovered. Within a radius of 100km around Antofagasta it is possible to find numerous archaeological remains (Pucarás, cave paintings), immense salt fields (Antofalla, Salar del Hombre Muerto) and among the constellation of volcanoes (estimated around 200 across the Catamarca’s puna) stands out the Galán, whose boiler is the largest in the world with almost 35km in diameter, the product of a colossal explosion.

The city rises in a depression in the ground, surrounded by stone walls up to 100 meters high, the result of the presence of two rivers. In the small church is venerated the patron saint of the village, Our Lady of Loreto. The adjacent hill is an excellent viewpoint that lets you have an idea of the majesty of volcanoes and salt fields in the surroundings. The city has basic services, and occasionally (not always) fuel.

Accommodation is limited to the cozy Municipal lodge, and recently a few families are offering homestay services to welcome travelers. In all districts of Antofagasta de la Sierra there are people prepared to support, inform and help you enjoy the puna scenery. Tours, activities and rates can be consulted in advance in the House of Antofagasta.

The most common way to travel to Antofagasta is by bus, whose frequency is twice per week (Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:15 am.) it departs from the Bus Station, company ""El Antofagasteño"" and it returns every Friday. If you travel in your vehicle, get yourself informed on the state of the roads and the availability of fuel at the service station.

On Dec. 10 they celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto, and in March you can enjoy the Craft and Livestock Fair of Puna.
