FIAMBALÁ

It is the last town of importance to the west of Catamarca’s Province, in the road that crosses to Chile by the San Francisco’s pass. It was founded in 1702 by Diego Frites de Carrizo, in a great valley settled in the middle of the Cordillera area.

Nowadays it’s possible to contemplate in the whole valley wide plantations of olive trees and vineyards, from which are elaborated well known regional wines. Fabrics, alpaca and llama blankets and embroidered bedspreads are other regional products more typical.

It’s a must a visit to San Pedro’s Church (NHM), built in 1770, with adobe walls, bell tower and a prominent portico. Inside is kept an image of San Pedro that came from Bolivia, worshiped in the whole district. The other great attraction in this city is the Fiambalá hot waters that were destroyed almost entirely by a great alluvium a few years ago. There are projects to rebuild them soon.
