HUMAHUACA

It was an important center in the colonial era, resulted in the transformation of the pre-existing omaguaca town which had a tambo or inn from Inca times. Time seems not to have passed since those times, and its streets retain their historic appearance in its building and its narrow cobbled streets. The church (1641), dedicated to Our Lady of Candelaria (February, 1-2), contains works of artistic value like the carving of its patron virgin and the twelve prophets, by Marcos Sapaca, of the Cuzco school. In the Cabildo, an antique clock moves an image in natural size of San Francisco Solano that appears every day at noon behind a door to deliver a blessing to those present on the square, while a colorful mixture of tourists and coyas complete the stage. Monument to Independence (1950), on top of the stairs that come out of the plaza, serves as a framework for the outstanding amphitheater which is convened every year to Tantanakuy, non commercial musicians gathering, which brings together great personalities such as Jaime Torres and all the creators of the region. If you are interested in archeology at the top of the hill are the remains of the tower of Santa Barbara, used as a fortress by the Spaniards in the nineteenth century and combat site (1837) during the war against the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation. It’s also a must the Archaeological Museum and the Regional Folk, where several traditional customs are showed: the making of chicha, remedies, amulets and witchcraft, the burial and dig up rites of the Carnival, traditional costumes and crafts. In addition, 25 Km north from the city are the petroglyphs of lnca Cave.
