IRUYA

Iruya, whose name means “hard straw"" or ""place of the high grass,"" is a remote town that holds the most pure Humahuaca’s essence, with their houses, their steep cobblestone streets, and the simplicity of its people. In its surroundings you can find the pre-Columbian ruins of Titiconte. Every August 1º people celebrate the ""Festival of the Pachamama"", and the first weekend in October takes place a special celebration in honor of the Virgin of the Rosary, where pagan and traditional religion believes mix together in a unique way. Hundreds of people from the Puna area congregate to participate in religious acts, singing, praying and playing their native instruments: Quena, boxes and sikus, accompanied by typical dance of cachis, symbolizing the struggle between good and evil. You can not miss knowing it. It is 74 km from Humahuaca, through a splendid mountain road.
