JUNÍN DE LOS ANDES

Junín de los Andes, located southwest of the province of Neuquén, is the gateway to Lanin’s National Park. From this location you can base and tour around the Park, and also visit cultural sites such as rural Mapuche communities, urban museum with unique collections, the sanctuary with its peculiar cultural syncretism (Christian and Mapuche) and Via Christi, monumental work that continues the spirit of integration of the Shrine.

The city, situated on a vast valley on the right bank of the river Chimehuin, was founded in 1883. Its origins date back to pre-Hispanic times, when Mapuche and Tehuelche tribes shared these immense valleys. With the Desert campaign comes the ""Huincas"" (""white"" in the Mapuche language) who with the intention of settling Argentine sovereignty, face off in heavy fighting with the natives. It was built here the first Fort, known as ""Fort Junín"", which in Aimará means ""grass"" or ""pasture"". The location was delineated with characteristics of a town, with its square, blocks divided into lots, country houses and farms that, in time, would be occupied by its first settlers, attracted by the fertility of the soil and good climate.
