LA PAYUNIA

This large reserve covers an area of 450,000 hectares. To travel it’s required to hire a guide in Malargue, who also will show you details otherwise would be unnoticed. The other drawback of traveling without company is the danger of having a problem with the vehicle in the middle of the reservation.

Landscapes that can be seen seems from another planet (look at the photos that accompany this story). There are extensive lava plains with volcanic cones, with flattened peaks, lined up in groups or independent one from others. It highlights extensive basalt cast and pyroclasts fields with different colors, which date back to very recent geological epochs.

The reserve is also a shelter for many local species of wildlife, such as guanacos, foxes, rheas and some endemic reptiles. It is not unusual to find large groups of guanacos stopping their march to observe with curiosity but with caution to human visitors.

There are solupal formations in the highest summits (Nevado, Payún and Payún Matru mountains) and grassland in the foothills of the Nevado. In the shrub steppe of Payunia there are mostly solupals, which to the west are transformed into wasteland of vegetation in a mound. In addition to solupe, there are Jarrillas, Molles and pichanillas.

To go, it is necessary to have a full day and an integral traction vehicle, as sand can make it impossible to go to a conventional car
