LA PLATA

Unlike most cities, La Plata did not arise from buildings of the residents around the typical train station. Its urban design was previously planned to the finest detail, from the location of public buildings to the layout of the streets. In 1880, Dardo Rocha who at that time was the governor of the province of Buenos Aires decided to establish the capital city. The government asked for international project competition to design the most important public buildings and the prison, the Police and Fire Departments and the Catholic Church. For those who enjoy architecture and urbanism, La Plata is going to rock you: Public buildings are established over three fundamental axes: the one that draws the avenues 51 and 53 and in direction perpendicular to the streets 7 and 13. Government House, located in front of the Legislature, on the other side of the Plaza San Martín, was designed by the Belgian Julio Doral. The building of the Municipality is one of the most beautiful; it is separated from the Cathedral by Moreno Square. With German Renaissance style it also built after an International Project Contest, being the winner the German architect Uberto Stier of the Hannover School. Its main hall, which is accessed by a marble staircase, has Roman, French and Greek influences. The floor is made with Slavonian oak, it has German stained glass windows and brass chandeliers weigh 1200 kilograms with 78 lamps.

A must for a one-day visit to this city: The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of La Plata, the Children’s Republic and the Natural Science Museum. "
