TERMAS DE RÍO HONDO

This city is located over layers of thermal waters that make it the most important tourist destination in the province. It has about 200 hotels of different categories that provide varied services, ranging from large thermal pools, bathtubs in the rooms, whirlpool, to mud treatments, sauna, etc., in spas or resorts. The baths should not last more than 15 minutes and it is recommended the same time for resting. Contrasting with the tranquility of the thermal baths it is the casino, one of the main points of the night life, where in addition to the gambling tables are offered theater and musical shows. There are also several restaurants and traditional “peñas” that offer typical meals of the area while enjoying folklore.

Another activity to carry out in Termas de Rio Hondo is fishing, because the reservoir provides good amount of fishes like dorado, surubí, pacu and tararira. In its extension, more than 33,000 ha, there are several clubs and piers that allow sailing and the practice of water sports like jet skiing or windsurfing. The rivers Marapa, Salí, Gastona and Medinas flow into the reservoir and it hydroelectric central supplies power to the cities of Termas de Rio Hondo, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán.

The Indians who formerly inhabited the region were aware of the healing properties of hot springs, they called them the Inti Yacu, Sun Water. The rainwater that is generated in the string of Aconquija is accumulated in underground layers in which it is heated, when emerge through fissures or holes it is nurtured with mineral and salts.
