Here is the "Pucará" (fortress) better known and rebuilt throughout the Quebrada (gorge) de Humahuaca. Tilcara is an excellent place to base and tour the gorge, with roomy campgrounds and the city is beautiful. The Museum of Archeology Dr. Eduardo Casanova, a branch of the National University of Buenos Aires, deserves a special visit; there are mummies and an excellent collection of elements from the cultures of Peru, tiahuanaku, and so on. The church of Tilcara was built near in 1797 but finished and inaugurated in 1865. During Easter, on Wednesday the people who made promises carry down the Virgin of Copacabana from Punta Corral; on Good Friday they walk the Stations of the Cross, in front of the "ermitas", huge banners of great artistic beauty, made up entirely with flowers and nuts by the residents. They are renewed year after year, and then exhibited at the museum.
