VALLE DE LA LUNA - ISCHIGUALASTO

Ischigualasto Provincial Park, or Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular wonders that give us our country. Its name is a Quechua word that means: site where sits the moon
It is located in the northwestern of the province of San Juan, in the Department of San Agustin de Valle Fértil; in a region that millions of years ago were a lake with abundant vegetation prone to the lives of various species of vertebrates. Nowadays, the desert climate is one of the characteristics of the place, with little rain that usually occurs in summer, strong winds and extreme temperatures.

The park that on November 30, 2000 was declared a Natural World Heritage by UNESCO, surprises the traveler along the 45 kilometers that comprise the tourist circuit, although the valley has an area slightly larger than 60,000 ha integrating one of the most important paleontological sites in the world. During the tour you can see different rock formations or Huayquerías (name which the locals call these formations), which are the result of constant work of agents of erosion. Even among the clay layers that make them up it can be displayed fossilized remains of flora that grew there. The beauty of the landscape is complemented by the variety of colors, lights and shadows that make perceiving the work of nature as unique and endless ...

  • Access to the park is $25 per person, when you tour with your own car, otherwise it must be organized in advance the circuit and the cost with the guide. The journey time is approximately three hours.
  • Residents in Argentina have a 40% discount so they pay $15, residents of the province of San Juan $10, students and retirees showing documentation that certifies its condition $5. it’s allowed the entrance every hour, the winter schedule is from 9 am to 4 pm, and in summer from 8 am to 5 pm.
  • The camp costs $3 per person and the Full Moon visit $10 (also per person).
  • At each point of interest for the circuit, the guide makes a brief and clear explanation of the different formations and the process of transformation that the region suffered over time.
  • On exit you visit the interpretation center. The visit to the museum is also guided by people from the University of San Juan and lasts approximately 45 minutes.
  • It is advisable to take a coat, in the afternoon the temperature begins to drop. As much as possible is advisable not to travel in summer because it is rainy season and the roads, over clay soil, can be impassable.
